OLNEY DAYS 2021
Free Paper Shred & Electronics Recycling Event

Saturday, April 24 from Noon - 3:00 pm
Behind Sandy Spring Bank (17801 Georgia Ave)

For everyone's safety, masks must be worn at all times by drivers who are dropping off items and by all passengers in the vehicle. Community members will not be permitted to exit their vehicle and volunteers will remove all boxes and bags of paper. For this reason, please place items in the trunk or rear of the vehicle to allow easy access and removal by volunteers. The limit per vehicle is 3 boxes or large bags of paper. Newspapers will not be accepted. There is no cost but donations are welcomed.

Solid State Recyclers will be on site to recycle e-waste. Acceptable items include computers (laptops and towers), servers, hard drives, circuit boards, UPS battery backups, flat screen monitors, printers, DVD and VCR players, modems, electric motors, rechargeable batteries (lithium ion or NiCad), cell phones, video games, and cords. CRT computer screens (19") will be accepted but not CRT (tube) televisions.

In 2012, Ruth Laughner, a long time Olney resident and volunteer, had the idea to include a Free Paper Shred as part of the Olney Days weekend. Over the years, Ms. Laughner grew this event from one or two shred trucks and added electronics recycling.  Sadly, Ms. Laughner passed away in 2020 and this year's event will be held in her honor. Barbara Falcigno, OCF Board Member and Olney Days organizer says, "Ruth always had a smile and a 'let's get this done' attitude.  Each year she would find another way to make the event better for the community. I do miss her." Olney Civic Fund is looking for a volunteer to run this event in future years. If interested, email olneycivicfund@gmail.com.

"The Olney Civic Fund is grateful to Sandy Spring Bank for opening their property for this event and sponsoring the shred trucks,” noted Helene Rosenheim, OCF Board Member and Olney Days organizer. “We would not be able to have this event without their continued support." Art Brodsky, Olney Civic Fund Chair, added,  "Although we could not have the full weekend of Olney Days events, we hope having at least one event brings the community closer to normal times and we look forward to a full celebration in 2022."

Thank you Sandy Spring Bank for sponsoring the Shred Event

Olney Civic Fund supports Olney area non-profits as well as plans community events such as Olney Days and Oktoberfestival. Events are free to attend but the expenses for the entire Olney Days weekend cost close to $30,000.  The largest costs (adding up to $24,000) are the park rental fees, fireworks, and the stage & sound. Sponsorships cover most of the expenses but individual donations are needed.  As Olney has grown, Olney Days keeps the small town feel where new relationships are made and old relationships are nurtured.
